Lesson 13   ANALYSIS OF DATA

13.  Analysis of data

In outlining the data analysis strategy, it is essential to specify the approach, whether manual or computer-assisted. For computer analysis, the chosen program and relevant statistical procedures should be identified. In quantitative studies, it is crucial to pinpoint the main variables for cross-tabulation.

For qualitative studies, particularly in the analysis of interviews or observation notes, the method of deriving meaning from respondent statements or observed issues is vital. One common technique involves identifying main themes by analyzing the gathered information. The choice between manual analysis and computer-assisted methods needs to be decided. In the context of content analysis, three approaches can be considered:

Direct Integration Method:

Develop a framework for your write-up based on your field notes. Integrate information directly into the developed structure. While flexibility allows for structural adjustments during analysis, having a clear vision aids in effectively slotting field information into the write-up.

Transcription and Theme Identification Method:

Transcribe field notes for repeated readings to identify main themes. These themes then serve as the foundation for the write-up.

Computer-Assisted Content Analysis:

Utilize computer programs like NUD*IST, ETHNOGRAPH, or NVIVO, specifically designed for handling descriptive data. These programs automate the content analysis process by identifying where specific text related to a theme appears, eliminating the need for manual searching.

The choice between these methods should align with the research objectives, available resources, and the nature of the data collected. Each method has its advantages and considerations, and the selection should be informed by the research goals and the nature of the data at hand

You need to specify the particular strategy you are proposing for data analysis in your study. Here are corrected versions of Examples A and B:

Example A

Frequency distributions will be analyzed concerning the following variables:

Ø  Age

Ø  Education

Ø  Occupation

Ø  Number of children

Ø  Duration of immigration

Ø  Other relevant factors

Cross-tabulations will be conducted to explore the impact of husband/wife roles based on the following variables:

Ø  Age

Ø  Number of children

Ø  Education

Ø  Occupation

Ø  Other pertinent factors

Example B

Frequency distributions will be examined with respect to the following variables:

Ø  Age

Ø  Income

Ø  Education

Ø  Occupation

Ø  Marital status

Ø  Duration of foster care

Ø  Number of foster children

Ø  Other relevant factors

Cross-tabulations will be performed to investigate the attitude towards foster payment, considering the following variables:

Ø  Age

Ø  Number of children

Ø  Education

Ø  Other pertinent factors

Ø  Occupation

Ø  Other relevant factors.

Statistical tests to be applied:

Ø  Chi-square

Ø  Regression analysis

Ø  Other relevant tests.

Example C

Frequency distributions will be examined with respect to the following variables:

Ø  Age

Ø  Parents’ occupation

Ø  Parents’ educational levels

Ø  Students’ occupational aspirations

Ø  Parental involvement in students’ studies

Ø  Self-esteem

Ø  Peer group influence

Ø  Number of hours spent on studies

Ø  Other relevant factors

Cross-tabulations will be conducted to explore academic achievement, considering variables such as:

Ø  Peer group influence

Ø  Parental involvement in students’ studies

Ø  Self-esteem

Ø  Occupational aspirations

Ø  Attitude towards teachers

Ø  Other pertinent factors

Example D

The in-depth interviews conducted with the families will be transcribed using Microsoft Word. These transcribed interviews will be thoroughly analyzed to identify the main themes related to the management and treatment of a child with ADHD. These themes will then be incorporated into the write-up.
